Secretary-General of the United Nations
Dear Mr. António Guterres,
We hereby address you as NGOs that share with the United Nations (UN) the desire to strive for a more balanced planet, where Humanity and all species can have a present as well as a promising future.
Your mandate as the UN Secretary-General has stood out for your sensitivity towards the topic of climate change and for the courage you have shown in making it a priority, warning Humanity about the critical importance of making changes in our lifestyle, including in our eating habits.
As the UN has pointed out in several reports published in recent years,, the livestock industry and the production of foods of animal origin, such as meat and dairy products, are amongst the main contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions, and, on the other hand, a plant-based diet is one of the most effective ways of mitigating the individual carbon footprint.
Quoting the 2021 UN report “Making Peace with Nature”, a change in the dietary habits of consumers, particularly in developed countries, where consumption of energy- and water-intensive meat and dairy products is high, would reduce the pressure on biodiversity and on the climate system.
A small action has the potential to make a huge difference and set an example for everyone, be it your grandchildren, the youth from around the world, or other world leaders; an example that would align your actions with the available scientific evidence.
Thus, we would like to challenge you to lead by your personal example, accepting to take a significant step towards adopting a plant-based diet.
The subscribing organizations and entities urge you to take this step and show, once again, your determination in striving for a sustainable future for planet Earth and for Humanity.
